Interview Skills
- Handling the hot seat can be one of the most nerve-wracking aspects of the job hunting process. But there are plenty of ways to calm those interview nerves, be prepared and get ready to make the right impression.
- Make sure the employer know the benefits of employing you. It is important to sell yourself by telling the employer details of your relevant skills and experience that you can contribute to their organisation.
- Always wear appropriate clothing for an interview setting is always smart clothing. IE: Suit/ Tie/ Blouse/ Smart shoes. Potential employers make their mind up about you with in the first minute.
- Try not to monopolise the meeting – let your interviewer talk.
- Find out what the key parts of the candidates specification are so you can show how you can meet them.
- Show that you have done some research - The fact that you have done research on your prospective employer will demonstrate your interest and enthusiasm, as well as your motivation to work for the organisation
- What are your weaknesses? This is perhaps the one question that finding it hard to answer goes down well. If you have a weakness focus on how you recognise it and what action you are taking to turn it into strength.
- Don't waffle
Answer questions properly - even if you need a few moments' silence to collect your thoughts
- Read your CV or application form again, thinking specifically about the qualities the employer is looking for.
- Remember that the interviewers are not expecting you to be perfect. They will be looking at your future potential, and how their organisation could help you to develop. Interviewers want to find out whether you have the ability, knowledge and motivation to fit into their organisation and make a valid contribution.
- Why should they hire you?
Most job adverts will list qualities they're looking for - a team worker, a good communicator - so it's up to you to think of examples of how you can demonstrate these skills. Be ready to talk about your knowledge, experience, abilities and skills. Have at least three strong points about yourself that you can relate to the company and job on offer.
- Remember your body language - It is not what you say, but how you say it. During the interview, do not fold your arms and lean back or look to the floor! Sit upright and try to maintain good eye contact. Use your hands and lean forward when making a point.
- Clarify anything you are unsure of If you are not certain what is meant by a particular question, ask for clarification. At the end, ask the interviewer if there is anything else he or she needs to know about.
- Above all, try to stay positive and remember that any experiences you have as part of a recruitment process are an opportunity for you to learn and to develop.
